By definition, traditional shutters are ¾-inch thick with 1¼-inch wide louvers. By regular usage, however, traditional shutters are wooden window covers with a traditional look. They can be flat panels, raised panels, louvered, or a combination.
Traditional shutters are available in most types of wood, including pine, oak, cedar, and maple. They can be unfinished or painted any color desired. For the look of wood without the hefty price tag, they are also available in faux wood or vinyl. One advantage of these wood imitators is that they do not warp or crack like wood can. Traditional shutters are relatively easy to install for the weekend do-it-yourself handyman. If you are not that adventurous or you simply prefer to have someone else do it, many companies offer installation. Local contractors and home improvement handymen will also install shutters, usually at a minimum price.
